Que bd[s] é que estás a ler?
Coisas novas que comprei numa viagem que fiz há pouco tempo a França. Os meus favoritos até agora são: Panier de Singe de Ruppert e Mulot, o último de Blutch, La Volupté [Futuropolis], e um livro feio, mas muito querido, chamado L’Aventure des Opposants de Boris Bukulin. E também dois livrinhos de François Ayroles, 28 Moments Clès de L’Histoire de La Bande Dessinée [Le 9ème Monde] e o divertido Mon Killofer de Poche da [colecção] Patte de Mouche. São todos livros da L’Association, menos aqueles que referi como sendo de outras editoras.
Tens uma bd que seja a tua preferida de sempre?
Não. Nunca fui obcecado por isso do melhor ou do favorito, mesmo a lista dos meus 10 mais muda de hora para hora
Quando e onde compraste a tua primeira bd?!
Lembro-me de comprar [ou melhor, de ver a minha mãe comprar] Pif Gadget e Strange [versão francesa da Marvel] num quiosque em Paris, quando tinha 5 anos.
Que autor de bd, para além de ti, é que gostarias de ser?
Pela productividade: Joann Sfar; pela imaginação: Gary Panter; pelo desenho: José Muñoz; pelo génio: George Herriman; pelo lucro: Jim Davis.
Qual é o teu material de desenho preferido? Alguma marca em especial?
Aparos de todos os tipos, sobretudo: Hunt, 102, 108, 100, 22; Gillott: 290, 1290, 303, 170.
Onde é que foste jantar fora pela última vez? Seguiste as sugestões dos chefe?!
Fui a um restaurante carote em Brooklin chamado Blue Ribbon. É um bocado parolo, mas apeteciam ostras à Jessica, e pronto, lá experimentamos as ostras do dia.
Ainda tens o teu quarto de adolescente em casa dos teus pais? Está “intacto”, costumas visitá-lo?
O quarto ainda lá está, mas não está “intacto”. Agora tem um papel de parede tipo vitoriano e uma cama maior, o guarda-fatos está cheio de fatos velhos do meu pai e algumas camisas havaianas. Ainda lá fico quando vou a casa, mas agora tenho uma mulher muito bonita deitada ao lado, uma mulher de verdade.
Matt Madden [1968, Nova Iorque] é autor de bd e ilustrador, além disso dá aulas de desenho e bd na School of Visual Arts. Acabou de editar o fantástico 99 Ways To Tell a Story pela Chamberlain Brothers.
Sudden Interview
What comic[s] are you reading now?
Some new stuff I picked up on a recent trip to France: my favorites so far are: Panier de Singe by Ruppert and Mulot, Blutch’s latest, La Volupté (Futuropolis), and an ugly but very charming book called L’Aventure des Opposants by Boris Bukulin. Also two small books by François Ayroles: 28 Moments Clés de l’Histoire de la Bande Dessinée (Le 9ème Monde) and his hilarious Patte de Mouche, Mon Killoffer de Poche. (All these are from L’Association unless otherwise noted, by the way).
Do you have a all-time favorite comic book?
No. I’ve never been fixated on a single best or favorite thing, and even my top 10 list changes from hour to hour.
When and where did you buy your first comic book?
I remember buying (or more likely watching my mother buy) Pif Gadget and Strange (French reprints of Marvel comics) at a newsstand in Paris when I was about 5 years old.
What comic artist, beside yourself, you would like to be?
For productivity: Joann Sfar, for imagination: Gary Panter, for drawing: José Muñoz, for genius: George Herriman, for profit: Jim Davis.
What is your favorite drawing material? Any specific brand?
Nibs of various sorts, mainly: Hunt: 102, 108, 100, 22; Gillott: 290, 1290, 303, 170.
What was the last place you went out for dinner? Did you followed the chef’s suggestions?
I went to a pricey restaurant in Brooklyn called Blue Ribbon. It’s a little tacky, too, but Jessica was in the mood for oysters, and yes, we tried the oysters of the day.
Do you still have your teenage room back at your parents house? Is it “intact” and do you visit it?
The room is still there but it is not “intact.” There is Victorian-looking wallpaper and a bigger bed; the closet is full of my father’s old suits and a few Hawaiian shirts. I still stay there when I go home, but now there’s a beautiful woman in bed next to me, a real one.
Matt Madden [1968, New York City] is a cartoonist and illustrator, who also teaches comics and drawing at the School of Visual Arts. He just published the fantastic 99 Ways To Tell a Story by Chamberlain Brothers.
