Que bd[s] é que estás a ler?
Bds funny animal dos anos 50: Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Mighty Mouse.
Tens uma bd que seja a tua preferida de sempre?
Acho que não, mas vou mencionar a velha série Magnus, Robot Fighter de Russ Manning, início dos anos 60.
Quando e onde compraste a tua primeira bd?!
A primeira bd que tive, fazia parte de uma pilha de bds com capas rasgadas (porque não se vendiam) da dime store que o meu pai tinha em Brownsville, Texas. Pouco depois, abandonamos a cidade a meio da noite e nunca mais lá voltamos. Por isso é que, acho eu, ando a ler essas bds dos anos 50. A primeira bd que me lembro de ter comprado, foi Yak Yak de Jack Davis. Comprei-a na Quicky Food Store em Sulphur Springs, Texas, a mesma loja onde comprei Famous Monsters of Filmland. Há cerca dois anos lá deitaram, finalmente, a loja abaixo.
Que autor de bd, para além de ti, é que gostarias de ser?
As vidas dos artistas são muitas vezes trágicas, por isso tenho medo de nomear alguém. Curvo-me, em primeiro lugar, perante Herriman, Kirby e Crumb. Mas também me curvo perante muitos outros.
Qual é o teu material de desenho preferido? Alguma marca em especial?
Quando faço bd, desenho com lápis Nº 2 sobre 3 Ply Strathmore Kid Finish. Apago com borracha branca da Moo, borrachas moles e borrachas de tinta. Não gosto de correctores. Ou apago ou deixo ficar os erros. Dou tinta com canetas japonesas de aparo “G” ou pincéis de marta nº 2. Também uso canetas de aparo da Speedball. Prefiro tusche [tinta litográfica] da Pelikan, porque é muito preta e à prova de água. Na pintura, uso acrílicos da Liquitex sobre tela ou papel de aguarela Arches 640 g/m².
Onde é que foste jantar fora pela última vez? Seguiste as sugestões do chefe?!
Gosto do Schnack em Redhook, Brooklyn. Servem cachorros, hambúrgueres e root beer floats muito bem feitos. O chefe não faz sugestões.
Ainda tens o teu quarto de adolescente em casa dos teus pais? Está “intacto”, costumas visitá-lo?
Os meus pais mudaram de casa uma ou duas vezes por ano, isto desde que os conheço. Hoje o meu estúdio, é o quarto de adolescente que sempre sonhei ter quando era miúdo. Já a garagem psicadélica onde costumava parar nos anos 60, foi pintada quando nos mudamos.
Nota: “dime store”, loja dos 10 cêntimos, equivalente às lojas de 1,5 Euro, antigas lojas dos 300; “root beer floats”, tipo de cerveja, com ou sem álcool, misturada com gelado.
Gary Panter [1950, Durant, Oklahoma - E.U.A], ilustrador, pintor, designer e autor de bd, é um dos mais carismáticos e influentes artistas da sua geração. O traço bruto e a habilidade de combinar e recriar estilos diferentes são a principal “imagem de marca” do trabalho de Gary. Obras como Jimbo in Purgatory e Jimbo’s Inferno, ambos pela Fantagraphics, são de leitura obrigatória para qualquer leitor de bd. Outro título imperdível é Facetasm, com Charles Burns.

What comic[s] are you reading now?
Funny animal comics from the 1950s: Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Mighty Mouse.
Do you have a all-time favorite comic book?
I don’t think so, but I will say the old Magnus, Robot Fighter comics, by Russ Manning, from the early 60s.
When and where did you buy your first comic book?
The first comic, I had, was one of a giant stack of comics with the covers ripped off (because they didn’t sell) my father gave me from his dime store in Brownsville, Texas. Shortly afterwards, we left town in the middle of the night and never came back, which is why I am reading those old 50s comics today, I think. The first one I remember buying was Yak Yak by Jack Davis. I bought it at the Quicky Food Store in Sulphur Springs, Texas, the same place that I bought Famous Monsters of Filmland. They finally tore it down about 2 years ago.
What comic artist, beside yourself, you would like to be?
Artists lives are often tragic, so I am afraid to name one. I bow to Herriman, Kirby and Crumb, first. I bow to a whole lot of others, too.
What is your favorite drawing material? Any specific brand?
Nowadays, for comics, I draw with #2 pencils on 3 ply Strathmore Kid Finish paper. Erase with white rubber MOO brand erasers and kneaded erasers and ink erasers. I don’t like white out. I erase or leave mistakes. Ink with japanese G dip pens or #2 sable brushes. I use Speedball dip pens, too. I prefer Pelican tusche ink, because it’s very black and waterproof. For painting I use Liquitex acrylics on canvas or 300 lb Arches watercolor paper.
What was the last place you went out for dinner? Did you followed the chef’s suggestions?
I like Schnack in Redhook Brooklyn. They serve carefully made hotdogs and burgers and root beer floats. The chef makes no suggestions.
Do you still have your teenage room back at your parents house? Is it “intact” and do you visit it?
My parents have changed houses every year or two since I’ve known them. My studio now, is the teenage room as I wished it would be when I was a kid. My psychedelic garage hangout back in the 60s got painted over when we moved.
Gary Panter [1950, Durant, Oklahoma - USA], illustrator, painter, designer, cartoonist, is one of the most charismatic and inspiring artists of his generation. The “ratty” line and the ability to combine and recreate different styles are a trademark of Gary’s groundbreaking work in illustration and comics. Jimbo in Purgatory and Jimbo’s Inferno, both by Fantagraphics, are mandatory reading for all comic readers. Also, don’t miss the grotesquely funny Facetasm, with Charles Burns.
