Today’s sudden interview is with Kevin Scalzo…
Que bd[s] é que estás a ler?
Agora nenhum comic, mas estou a ler The Complete Peanuts, Luluzinha e as reedições de Walt & Skeezix com a minha filha. Leio sobretudo livros sobre pintores e história da Arte e quaisquer que sejam as revistas que a minha mulher e eu assinamos.
Tens uma bd que seja a tua preferida de sempre?
Isso é mesmo difícil de responder. Quando era miúdo adorava as edições anuais de Dennis, o Pimentinha em férias (Dennis Vai Ao México, Dennis Vai A Washigton, Hollywood, etc, etc). Nunca me fartava!
Quando e onde compraste a tua primeira bd?!
Não me lembrava, por isso perguntei ao meu irmão mais velho, ele acha que foi o Capitão América (e o Falcão) número 174. Comprei-o em El Cerrito, Califórnia, num 7-Eleven em 1974.
Que autor de bd, para além de ti, é que gostarias de ser?
Os meus preferidos são os disfuncionais: Wally Wood, Jack Cole, R. Crumb. E também Bushmiller, Crane, Kurtzman, Gould ou Wolverton.
Qual é o teu material de desenho preferido? Alguma marca em especial?
Na bd uso lápis Staedtler (2B, F), borrachas de plástico Staedtler Mars e papel bristol 3 ply da Strathmore. Para dar tinta, qualquer pincel velho serve, aparos Hunt 102 e ainda canetas Pigma da Sakura. Na pintura, uso acrílicos Golden sobre tela ou linho.
Onde é que foste jantar fora pela última vez? Seguiste as sugestões dos chefe?!
Nós é mais take away do que jantar fora, mas da última vez [que jantamos fora] foi no Shake Shack em Nova Iorque com a minha filha e não precisei de qualquer sugestão!
Ainda tens o teu quarto de adolescente em casa dos teus pais? Está “intacto”, costumas visitá-lo?
Não, quando éramos miúdos os meus pais mudavam-se muito de casa. O meu antigo quarto consiste em seis caixas arrumadas no meu estúdio.
Kevin Scalzo [1969, Winnipeg - Canadá], autor de bd, ilustrador e pintor. Começou por publicar mini-comics, como Boobytit, na década de 90. Mais tarde, publicaria inclusive Aw Nuts! com o irmão, David. Desde 2001, e até à data, Kevin publicou dois números de Sugar Booger, belíssimo e colorido mini-comic com as aventuras do urso Sugar Booger, cujo terceiro número está previsto para 2008. O projecto Sweat Book de esboços terá também um segundo volume em 2008. Kevin participou nas recentes exposições BLAB! em Los Angeles e St. Louis. What comic[s] are you reading now?
No comics at the moment, but I am reading The Complete Peanuts, Little Lulu, and the Walt & Skeezix volumes with my daughter. I mostly read books about painters and art history, and whatever magazines my wife and I subscribe to.
Do you have a all-time favorite comic book?
That’s really hard to answer. When I was little I loved the Dennis, The Menace Vacation Annuals (Dennis Goes To Mexico, Dennis Goes To Washington, Hollywood, etc, etc..). I couldn’t get enough!
When and where did you buy your first comic book?
I couldn’t remember, so I asked my older brother and he thinks it was Captain America (and the Falcon) # 174. Bought it at the El Cerrito, Ca., 7-Eleven, 1974.
What comic artist, beside yourself, you would like to be?
The dysfunctional ones are my favorites : Wally Wood, Jack Cole, R. Crumb. Along with Bushmiller, Crane, Kurtzman, Gould or Wolverton.
What is your favorite drawing material? Any specific brand?
For comics I use Staedtler pencils (2B, F) and Staedtler Mars Plastic Erasers on 3 ply Strathmore bristol. For inking, any ol’ brush will do, Hunt 102 nibs, plus Sakura Pigma pens. For painting I use Golden acrylics on canvas or linen.
What was the last place you went out for dinner? Did you followed the chef’s suggestions?
We take out a lot more than go out, but the last time was at the Shake Shack in NYC with my daughter, and I didn’t need any recommendations!
Do you still have your teenage room back at your parents house? Is it “intact” and do you visit it?
No, my parents moved us around a lot when we were kids. My old room consists of about six boxes tucked away in my studio.
Kevin Scalzo [1969, Winnipeg - Canada], cartoonist, illustrator and painter. Kevin started publishing mini-comics in the 90s, such as Boobytit. Later on, he also published Aw Nuts! with his brother David. Since 2001, until present, Kevin published two issues of Sugar Booger, a beautiful colored mini-comic featuring the bear Sugar Booger – the third issue is planned to come out in 2008. His sketchbook project Sweat Book will also have a second volume in Spring 2008. Kevin has participated in both recent BLAB! art shows in Los Angeles and St. Louis.
