Que bd[s] é que estás a ler?
Tirando as aventuras de Travis McGee de John D. MacDonald*, não tenho lido muita coisa desde Maio. Mas hoje li Klezmer: Tales of the Wild East de Joann Sfar, gostei muito de como o desenho e as cores eram esboçadas, rápidas e expressivas. Gostei que o desenho fosse descuidado, mas ao mesmo tempo preciso e suficiente.
Tens uma bd que seja a tua preferida de sempre?
Talvez My New York Diary de Julie Doucet. Ou a colectânea Twisted Sisters 2.
Quando e onde compraste a tua primeira bd?!
Sei que comprava comics do Archie à saída da mercearia. Mas a primeira vez que fui a uma loja de bd, foi com a minha mãe, quando tinha talvez 11 anos. Tínhamos acabado de visitar um festival [de bd] estranho e pequeno, que havia num hotel barato perto de minha casa. Estava à procura de bd que me interessasse, o que era difícil, porque eu só gostava de bd para miúdas ou então de comics, como o do Archie. A minha mãe comprou-me um número de Amethyst [ametista], um comic de super heroínas. Não gostei lá muito dele, mas adorei as roupas da Amethyst e que o nome dela fosse o de uma gema, porque eu era doida por gemas.
Que autor de bd, para além de ti, é que gostarias de ser?
Qualquer autor que não tenha outro trabalho que não seja a bd, era isso quem eu queria ser! Visitei o Johnny Ryan há pouco tempo, tem um estilo de vida apenas produtivo, invejei a ética profissional e a inspiração dele.
Qual é o teu material de desenho preferido? Alguma marca em especial?
Gosto de desenhar com lápis técnicos e adoro a borracha técnica Tuff Stuff, é muito fina, dura e bonita. Uso para as aguarelas um conjunto velho da Winsor & Newton que os meus pais me ofereceram no liceu e pastilhas de tempera para as aguadas cinzas, que recomendo vivamente. Acho que as minhas são Daler-Rowney, a minha tia ofereceu-mas em 1995. Tenho andado a prometer a mim mesma, para aí há uns dez anos, um conjunto grande de marcadores Prismacolor, mas eles são tão caros que nunca consegui tê-los. Mas pode ser que consiga em breve. Gosto de usar um bocadinho de tudo. Também gosto daquelas aguarelas concentradas Dr. Ph. Martin’s, mas não são resistentes à luz e também são muito caras, por isso estão fora de questão.
Onde é que foste jantar fora pela última vez? Seguiste as sugestões dos chefe?!
Tenho andado a jantar fora muitas vezes, a minha mãe esteve cá e fomos a um restaurante franco-suíço que há aqui em Santa Rosa, o La Gare.
O chefe sugeriu terrina de cordeiro mal passado, uma coisa que geralmente não me lembraria de pedir. Estava super delicioso. Foi bom, porque a minha mãe e eu tivemos uma zanga muito grande ao início da noite, depois tivemos uma espécie de conversa de reconciliação muito triste. Quando saímos para jantar acho que estávamos meio magoadas. Mas o jantar foi tão fino e delicioso que acabou por ser um dos melhores momentos da nossa estadia.
Ainda tens o teu quarto de adolescente em casa dos teus pais? Está “intacto”, costumas visitá-lo?
Mais ou menos. É um quarto entre andares e tenho montes de tralha no sótão daquele que foi o meu quarto. Mas tirando os quadros que pintei no liceu, é sobretudo um quarto de visitas/arrumação. Apesar disso, no sótão, tenho montes de desenhos que fiz na escola, cartas de pessoas com quem me correspondia no liceu e também um monte com todos os e-mails que escrevia e recebia no meu ano de caloira fora de casa, num total de 3 resmas de papel, que por alguma razão acabei por imprimir. Tenho que queimar aquilo.
Quando vou a casa, visitar a minha mãe na Florida, geralmente combino com a minha irmã. Ela dorme na cama do quarto, eu no sofá cama, porque sou mais nova do que ela e por isso mesmo inferior. Também é suposto que me sente no banco de trás do carro.

What comic[s] are you reading now?
Since May I haven’t read much besides Travis McGee mysteries by John D. MacDonald. But I read Klezmer Klezmer: Tales of the Wild East by Joann Sfar today and I really liked how sketchy and fast and expressive the drawing and painting were. I liked how sloppy yet accurate and sufficient the drawing was.
Do you have a all-time favorite comic book?
Probably My New York Diary by Julie Doucet. Or the Twisted Sisters 2 anthology.
When and where did you buy your first comic book?
I know I would get Archie comics at the grocery store checkout aisle. But the first time I went to a comic bookstore I went with my mom, when I was about 11 probably. We had just gone to a weird, small comics convention in a cheap hotel near my house. I was looking for comics I would be interested in, which was really hard, because I only liked girly comics, or comics like Archie. My mom got me an issue of Amethyst, a super-heroine comic. I didn’t like it that much but I did like Amethyst’s outfits, and that her name was a gem name. Because I was also a gem nerd.
What comic artist, beside yourself, you would like to be?
Any comic artist that doesn’t have a job besides drawing comics, I would love to be! I visited Johnny Ryan recently and he just has such a simply productive lifestyle, I envied his work ethic and inspiration.
What is your favorite drawing material? Any specific brand?
I like drawing with mechanical pencils, and I love the Tuff Stuff mechanical eraser, it’s very thin and hard and awesome. I watercolor with an old Winsor & Newton set my parents got me in high school and I use tempera cakes for gray washes, and I highly recommend those. I think mine are Daler-Rowney, but my aunt gave them to me in 1995. I’ve also been promising myself a big set of Prismacolor markers for about the last ten years, but they are insanely expensive so I’ve never gotten them. But I may soon. I like using a bit of everything. I also love those Dr. Ph. Martin’s concentrated watercolors but they’re not lightfast and they’re also very expensive so I usually just covet them from afar as well.
What was the last place you went out for dinner? Did you followed the chef’s suggestions?
I’ve been out to dinner a lot lately, my mother was here and we went to a French-Swiss restaurant here in Santa Rosa called La Gare.
The chef suggested the rack of lamb cooked medium rare, which is something I wouldn’t usually think to order. It was insanely delicious. It was great because my mom and I had had a big fight earlier in the evening, and kind of a sad reconciliation talk. When we went out to dinner I think we were both feeling kind of wounded. But it was so fancy and fun and delicious that it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.
Do you still have your teenage room back at your parents house? Is it “intact” and do you visit it?
Sort of. It is a split level room and I have a lot of stuff in the loft of what was my old bedroom. But other than some of my old highschool paintings, it is mainly a guest/storage room. In the loft, though, I have a lot of my old college drawings, letters from people I penpalled with in high school, and a weird stack of every single email I wrote or received in my freshman year away from home, totaling about 3 reams of paper, that I printed out for some reason. I need to burn it.
When I go home and visit my mom in Florida, I usually time it with my sister. She sleeps on the bed in the bedroom, and I sleep on the futon, since I am younger and therefore inferior. I am also supposed to sit in the back seat of the car as well.
